Omaha Injury Attorney Offers 4 Tips for Avoiding Accidents with Animals in Nebraska

Although distracted and reckless drivers present the greatest dangers on Nebraska roads, there is another hazard that can cause serious and potentially fatal accidents: wild animals, or animals that are not properly supervised by their owners. In fact, a recent study published on Defenders.org indicates that there are approximately 1 million animal-on-vehicle accidents in the United States each year. These cause up to 200 human fatalities.

While animals are unpredictable, there are several steps you can take to reduce the risk of being in a serious crash with one. These steps can also help you avoid collisions with other vehicles due to an animal on the roadway.

At Rensch & Rensch Law, we know that not all accidents are avoidable – particularly those involving negligent motorists. If you were in a crash that another driver caused, then an Omaha injury lawyer can evaluate the incident to determine if you may have valid grounds for a lawsuit.

You may be entitled to lost wages, medical expenses and other damages from the at-fault party. Call us today at 1-800-471-4100 to schedule a consultation.

Until then, read on to learn four tips for avoiding accidents with animals:

  1. Know the Roads

It is important to be familiar and comfortable with the roads on which you are travelling. If you are driving on suburban roads, then there is a good chance that you may encounter smaller animals such as cats and dogs.

If you are heading into the countryside, then you can expect to find larger and more dangerous animals such as cows, deer and sheep on the road. If you know what to expect, then you may be able to anticipate and avoid a collision.

In particular, be aware of wooded areas that may hide an animal’s presence until it is too late. Also, pay careful attention to warning signs that indicate a high likelihood of encountering an animal.

  1. Watch out for “Animal Crossing” Signs

If you are driving through an area with signs that indicate animal crossing, then you should pay close attention. According to the Insurance Information Institute, you should be particularly aware of this danger between sunset and midnight, and shortly before sunrise. Pay close attention to the shoulders of the road, and stay within the recommended speed limits at all times.

  1. Use High-Beam Headlights

When driving at night, get into the habit of using your high-beam headlights – provided that there is no oncoming traffic. These will show the eyes of any animals in the road ahead more clearly.

  1. Stay in Your Lane

Many people make the mistake of swerving to avoid large animals, which often results in a serious crash with another vehicle. The Insurance Information Institute recommends braking firmly and safely when you notice the animal, and attempting to come to a stop without moving into oncoming traffic.

If you were in a crash and it was not your fault, contact Rensch & Rensch Law. An Omaha personal-injury attorney from our firm can investigate your accident and guide you through the claims process. Call us today at 1-800-471-4100 to schedule a consultation.
