Crash alert: Bystanders helped save sheriff’s deputy following Scottsbluff crash
SCOTTSBLUFF, NE – The Nebraska State Patrol said witnesses came to the aid of a Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Deputy following an accident on Monday morning.
According to an NSP news release, 39-year-old Josh Ruzicka of Gering apparently suffered a medical incident while driving his marked patrol vehicle on Highway 71 in Scottsbluff at about 7:20 a.m. The vehicle went off the road, hit an embankment, and caught fire.
Multiple bystanders saw what happened and came to assist the deputy, who was unconscious when they arrived. The bystanders managed to extract the deputy from the vehicle and pull him to safety.
He was taken by emergency crews to Regional West Medical Center, where he was reported to be alert and in good condition.
“Our entire department is very grateful for the quick actions taken by the witnesses to remove Deputy Ruzicka from the vehicle,” said Scotts Bluff County Sheriff Mark Overman. “We would also like to thank the Scottsbluff Police Department, Scottsbluff Fire Department, Scotts Bluff Rural Fire Department, and Valley Ambulance for their assistance.”
The Nebraska State Patrol is investigating the crash.
