Speed May Have Contributed to School Bus Accident That Sent 6 to the Hospital

1011 News reports on a recent school bus accident that sent six people to the hospital. The crash occurred at the intersection of Ames and 63rd at around 4:20 p.m.

According to authorities, the bus was transporting three high school-aged students. The driver was attempting to turn left when it was hit by a Hyundai sedan.

One student was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The driver and four passengers in the Hyundai were also taken to the hospital for treatment. Although the cause of the crash is still under investigation, witnesses reported that the Hyundai was travelling at a high speed just before the collision.

Speeding not only increases the likelihood of crashing, but it also makes injuries more likely to occur in the event of an accident. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, speeding contributed to 27 percent of all traffic fatalities in 2015, and it has been a factor in at least 1 in 4 traffic deaths since 2005.

If you were injured or lost a family member in a crash with a driver who was speeding, distracted, or otherwise negligent, contact Rensch & Rensch Law. An injury attorney will evaluate your case to determine if you have grounds for a claim.

You may be entitled to compensation for medical bills, lost income, and non-economic damages. Call 1-800-471-4100 to schedule a free initial consultation with an accident lawyer in Omaha

How Can I Avoid Speeding-Related Accidents?

Although you cannot control the actions of other drivers, there are steps you can take to reduce your risk of being involved in a speeding-related collision. These four strategies are particularly effective:

  1. Activate Cruise Control: When travelling long distances, it is not always easy to maintain a consistent velocity. You can avoid speeding by activating your cruise control; however, you should never use cruise control on wet roads. If you hydroplane, cruise control will cause your wheels to continue spinning at the same velocity, which could cause your vehicle to skid.
  2. Plan Ahead to Avoid Rushing: Try to leave for work and other appointments early so you do not have to rush.
  3. Try to Drive a Few Miles Slower Than the Speed Limit: It is a common misconception that speed limits are over-restrictive to minimize the risk of accidents; however, the posted speed limit is typically the fastest possible speed to ensure safe driving. Rather than driving a few miles over the speed limit, try to maintain a velocity that is just below the limit to reduce your risk of crashing.
  4. Avoid Distracted Driving: Distracted motorists are more likely to lose track of their speed, and they might not notice abrupt changes in the speed limit. Remember to put your cell phone on silent before you start the engine, never eat or drink behind the wheel, and try to limit the number of passengers you carry.

If you were injured by a driver who was speeding or breaking another traffic law, turn to Rensch & Rensch Law for comprehensive legal guidance. Our attorneys have litigated more than 100 jury trials, and we will relentlessly help you fight for the highest possible compensation.
