3 Common Motorcycle Accidents and How to Avoid Them

Part of what makes riding a motorcycle so fun is the ever-present sense of danger. If you speak to someone who has been in a serious accident, though, you will understand just how painful, debilitating and costly a crash can be.

Omaha Motorcycle Accident attorney

Many motorcycle wrecks are avoidable, but if you keep a few key guidelines in mind while on the road, there is a chance that you can anticipate potential crash scenarios and avoid them. However, even if you do ride responsibly, there is always the risk of sustaining injuries in a collision. Few people understand this like the attorneys at Rensch & Rensch Law.

Contact us today if you were in an accident, and an Omaha personal-injury lawyer can look through the details of your case and determine if you may have valid grounds for a claim. Call us today at 1-800-471-4100 to schedule an appointment, and read on to learn about three common motorcycle accident scenarios and how to avoid them:

  1. Entering Corners Too Fast

If you enter a corner too fast, there is a good chance that you will lose control of the bike. This is particularly true if the corner continues to tighten to the point where you have no option but to abandon the bike.

Ride Apart argues that the best way to avoid this type of accident is to ride within your means and reduce speeds where necessary. Use visual clues, such as streetlights, road signs and trees, to judge the curve. If you are unable to determine how sharp the corner is, play it safe and reduce your speed.

  1. Car Doors Opening

If you ride between a line of parked cars and active traffic, then you are at risk of riding into a car door that opens unexpectedly. If you are travelling at high speeds, you risk flipping over the door and sustaining serious injuries upon impact.

Riding between stationary cars and an active traffic lane is a dangerous activity, and you should avoid doing so at all costs. Drivers and passengers rarely expect a motorcycle to appear, and pedestrians often step into the gap. If you do face this accident scenario, brake as hard as you can because any speed that you lose before the impact could save your life.

  1. Riding under the Influence

According to the Insurance Information Institute, drunk riders cause a significant percentage of motorcycle accidents. Studies suggest that in 2013, 28 percent of all motorcycle riders who suffered fatal injuries in crashes had blood alcohol content levels of more than 0.08 percent.

Operating a motorcycle or car while under the influence is never a good idea. Even a single drink can affect your balance on the bike, and it is best to avoid alcohol entirely if you intend on riding home.

If you sustained injuries in a motorcycle accident, you may be able to bring a successful claim against the at-fault party. At Rensch & Rensch Law, we can assist you with this process. Call an Omaha personal-injury attorney today at 1-800-471-4100.
