4 Tips to Help Drivers Avoid Accidents with Bicyclists

Improved heart health, reduced stress, zero carbon footprint – there are plenty of reasons to ride a bicycle. Unfortunately, a crash with a motor vehicle is likely to end with serious injuries.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 720 bicyclists were killed and another 50,000 were injured in motor-vehicle accidents in 2014. Victims and their families often face overwhelming debt due to medical bills and lost wages. Many survivors endure extreme pain and cannot participate in the activities they enjoyed before their collisions.

If you were hurt or lost a family member due in a bicycle crash, contact Rensch & Rensch Law. An injury lawyer in Omaha will help you pursue justice and compensation from the at-fault driver.

Our accident attorneys have a reputation for recovering substantial settlements and verdicts for our clients. If we do not win, then you will not pay attorneys’ fees.

4 Ways Drivers Can Avoid Collisions with Bicyclists

Although modern automotive technologies are preventing accidents and saving lives, defensive driving is still the best way to avoid wrecks. In order to drive defensively, motorists must know how to anticipate dangerous situations.

This is particularly important when approaching a bicyclist. Here are four tips to help you avoid bicycle collisions:

  1. Make eye contact with the cyclist to confirm he or she has seen you;
  2. Use your turn signals early so bicyclists can anticipate your actions;
  3. Leave 3 feet of space between your vehicle and the bicyclist when overtaking; and
  4. Check your blind spot before changing lanes, turning or opening your door.

6 Tips to Help Bicyclists Avoid Accidents with Motor Vehicles

If you ride a bicycle often, it is critical that you are proactive about your safety. All it takes is one distracted, drunk or negligent driver to cause a serious accident.

The American Automobile Association offers these tips to help bikers avoid collisions:

  1. Never wear your headphones while riding;
  2. Use hand signals to help drivers anticipate your actions;
  3. Form a single-file line when riding in a group;
  4. Add reflective tape to your clothing, helmet and bicycle;
  5. Never ride your bike without a helmet; and
  6. Ride in the same direction as traffic.

Unfortunately, even the most diligent bicyclists and drivers cannot prevent all accidents. If you were injured in a bicycle crash that another person caused in Nebraska, contact Rensch & Rensch Law.
